A First Look at Soundview Park
Soundview Park Bronx is a waterfront stretch of open space at the mouth of the Bronx River, where the river opens into the East River. At 205 acres, it brings together parkland, recreation areas and shoreline. The park’s location also gives its waterfront paths a broader outlook across the surrounding waterways.
The land was marshland before New York City acquired the original 93 acres in 1937. The city added more land in 1940, followed by further additions in 1953, 1967 and 2002. That history helps explain the park’s mix of open ground and restored wetland habitat.
Soundview Park is about a 23-minute walk from Sheridan Hotel, making it a nearby option for time outdoors. If you’re comparing waterfront green spaces, you can also read this guide to Starlight Park.

Waterfront Walks and Open Space
A 1.5-mile waterfront path leads to a restored salt marsh at the park’s southeastern corner. The restoration project aimed to bring back aquatic ecosystems, improve water quality and provide habitat for wildlife. You can follow the path toward the marsh, then spend time in the open parkland along the way.
The Hunts Point Greenway runs along the park. Across the surrounding waterways, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens are labeled on the park trail guide, giving a sense of the wider setting as you walk. Walking and biking paths offer ways to move through the park beyond the waterfront route.
For a shorter stop, the park’s Lafayette Avenue playground sits between Morrison and Boynton Avenues. NYC Parks lists inclusive play elements, limited wheelchair access and an accessible public restroom there.

Sports and Recreation Facilities
Soundview Park has a broad mix of sports facilities: six grass baseball fields, a cricket pitch, a running track, a soccer field, six basketball courts, six handball courts and a synthetic-turf field. There’s also a dog run, a performance lawn, plus walking and biking paths.
That range makes it possible to combine a walk by the water with time around the playing fields or courts. The performance lawn adds another outdoor gathering space. For a different kind of Bronx outing, see this guide to the Bronx Zoo.
Getting to the Park
The park is in the Soundview area of the Bronx, at the Bronx River’s meeting point with the East River. Lafayette Avenue, Morrison Avenue, Boynton Avenue, Randall Avenue and Soundview Avenue are among the streets identified around the park.
The Bx36 and Bx36 LTD serve the Soundview–George Washington Bridge route; check current service details with the MTA before setting out.
Once you arrive, choose your route around what you want to see: head for the waterfront path and marsh, or make the playground, fields and courts your focus. The park’s walking and biking paths connect its open spaces and recreation areas.
Access, Rules and Seasonal Checks
NYC Parks lists limited wheelchair access at Soundview Park Playground, along with an accessible public restroom and inclusive play elements. These details apply to the playground listing, so they do not establish access conditions across every part of the park.
Special-event permits are handled through NYC Parks. Amplified sound is not permitted in every park, and large events may also require a concession fee. If you’re planning a gathering, review NYC Parks’ permit guidance. For current park information and service details, check the official site before you go.
