What to Expect at Crotona Park
Crotona Park occupies 127.50 acres in the Bronx, between Fulton Avenue, Southern Boulevard and Crotona Park East. New York City acquired the land in 1888. The park’s name refers to the ancient Greek colony of Croton, known for its Olympic athletes.
Indian Lake is a focal point within the park. The 3.3-acre lake is home to ducks, turtles and fish, and NYC Parks counts 28 tree species across the grounds. Crotona Park combines this natural setting with a broad range of recreation facilities.
For a nearby outdoor break, Crotona Park is about a 19-minute walk from Sheridan Hotel.

Walking Routes and Recreation
The park includes the Crotona Park Greenway and Crotona Park Pond, as well as paths through its tree-lined landscape. The listed features support an easy mix of walking and outdoor activities, though no single route or trail distance is specified.
NYC Parks lists baseball fields, basketball and handball courts, soccer fields, tennis courts, pickleball courts and fitness equipment. The park has 20 hard tennis courts and five baseball diamonds. You’ll also find 11 playgrounds, public restrooms and a nature center. Fishing is among the listed activities.
If you’re planning time at the pool, Crotona Pool is an Olympic-size outdoor pool at 173rd Street and Fulton Avenue, and NYC Parks labels it accessible. Pool schedules can change, so check the official site before you go.
Seasonal Facilities and Park Rules
NYC Parks says parks generally may be used from 6:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m., unless different hours are posted at a specific park. The outdoor pool is a seasonal facility; confirm its operating schedule with NYC Parks before planning around a swim.
For a barbecue, use the designated area at Crotona Park East and Charlotte Street, by Indian Lake. NYC Parks prohibits propane, ground or camp fires, grilling in unauthorized areas and barbecuing by anyone 18 years old or younger.
Grills must be at least 3 feet off the ground and at least 10 feet from structures. A barbecue event involving more than 20 people requires a special events permit.
Dogs may be off leash during designated hours in park areas, except playgrounds and other places where signs expressly prohibit them. At other times, NYC Parks requires a leash no longer than 6 feet. In public, dog owners or attendants must carry proof of a current license and rabies vaccination, and must pick up after their dogs.
